Wendell

Wendell is big on charm and community

The town of Wendell was named after a local schoolteacher's favorite jurist, Oliver Wendell Holmes. In 1891, the first post office was built and Wendell was officially incorporated in 1903.

Although Holmes' name is pronounced "WIN-dell", when the railroad came to town, porters on the train would announce the name as it plied into the station, "WIN-DELL". This pronunciation was different than the justice's name, choosing instead with an emphasis on both syllables. It remains today.

Although a small town, Wendell is big on charm and community. Several homes are named on the National Register of Historic Places. There are festivals and events to bring people together, like the Harvest Festival, Halloween Treat Trail, Art Walk, 4th of July parade and more.

People comment on the laid-back lifestyle and convenience. Highway-64 runs through Wendell and nearby Interstate-264 gives fast access to Raleigh to the west and Interstate-95 to the east.
